Europe on a Budget (Part 5)

This is the last part to the mini series on Europe on a Budget.

We have explored saving money on transport, food, accomodation and travel guides. In this article, we will explore the last money saving idea for a budget trip to Europe.

Yes you know it. You have added up all the cost items for your budget which you have created to travel in Europe. The main cost items will be transporation, food and accomodation. So where else can all your money go to? Let me tell you:

Your money disappears when you start entering all the tourist sites. The entrance tickets to places like the zoo and stuff can cost you quite a fair bit of money. And there is no way escaping that cost right? Wrong!

Do you realise that most of the locals do not even visit this tourist sites themselves. The last time I visited my own tourist site in my home country was like EONs ago. So yes, you can visit a country without having to feel like you need to make a trip down to some tourist site just because the travel guide says so. Save yourself the money and tread down the road that the locals will tread.

Visit the local market or take a walk in the park instead. Do what the locals do and you will realise that you have seen much more of that country compared to visiting a tourist site.

Europe on a Budget (Part 4)

Another way to travel Europe on a budget is to not buy any travel guides. Yes you hear me. Stop wasting money buying those travel guides! Travel guides are costly and can easily set you back by $30 to $40 per book. Imagine if you were going to cover more than 3 countries! That would cost you $100 over just on travel guides alone.

You can simply go to the library to borrow a travel guide and make notes on the places that you will like to visit. Photostat the relevant pages and you will have a much lighter hand luggage to carry with you.

Another way will be to bring a laptop or a netbook. Yes, you might not be able to get connection all the time but it will come in handy especially if you are looking for information on the city that you are visiting.

Europe on a Budget (Part 3)

In this article, we will look at how you can save money on a budget trip to Europe. We will be looking at budget accomodation in this article.

If you are travelling to Europe on a budget, one of the highest cost items (other than air tickets) will be your daily accomodation. It is thus important to save as much as you can on accomodation. This might even mean spending more time in places where there is cheap accomodation or staying at hostels or hotels that are not really close to tourist sites.

While some people might like to book all their accomodation in advance, I prefer to book the accomodation for the first few nights and then book the rest of the accomodation along the way. This allows me to be more flexible when it comes to my itinerary.

There are a few good sites which you can explore to get the cheapest accomodation before planning your budget europe trip.

Here, I will list 5 of the top sites:

#1 - Hostel World.com
#2 - Budget Hotels
#3 - Hotel Club
#4 - Hostels.com
#5 - Zuji

Europe on a Budget (Part 2)

Europe on a budget is possible if you are also willing to skip the good food that might be available and settle your own meals.

I know that this is probably common sense but making your own sandwiches could really be much cheaper compared to eating fast food in some European countries. For example, Kentucky Fried Chicken in London for two people could easily cost 10 pounds. It might be much easier if you just settle for bread and save up that money for a longer trip, an air ticket or a rail ride.

So what are the things that you should bring to make sure that you can survive Europe on a budget? I would like to think that there are really a few items that you could bring that could go on a long way to help you save the money.

Here is my list to help you save money while travelling in Europe:
  1. Water bottle (Drink from your water bottle instead of buying can drinks at tourist spots)
  2. Teabags or 3-in-1 coffee mix
  3. Plastic knife (for spreading jam or peanut butter on your bread)
  4. Containers/lunch boxes/plastic wraps (to store your food)
  5. Biscuits
  6. Muesli Bars
  7. Raisins
  8. Dried Fruits/ Preserved Fruits

As far as possible, do your shopping in the grocery stores that the local shop in. Try not to buy things at tourist spots as the prices there are usually marked up like 100% to 200%.

Europe on A Budget

I have decided to start a mini 5 part series on how to travel Europe on a budget. We will look at how to lower your overall transportation costs in this article.

I travelled to Europe on a shoestring budget a few years back. I was still studying so did not have alot of savings. As I was on an exchange programme, I decided to make use of the very cheap budget airlines to fly around Europe. The budget airline that I flew was Ryan airlines. Click this link to see links to some of the budget Airlines in Europe: Budget Airlines In Europe

So how much did I pay to fly on Ryan Air? Some of the single trips were as low as 30 to 40 Euros (Tax inclusive). Once you manage to fly to London Stanstead airport, you are literally connected to the rest of Europe! That is the amazing thing about budget airlines.

Another way to lower your transportation costs is to make use of public transport in the cities. While the trains could be pretty expensive especially in London, buying a 10 trip ticket could sometimes save you some money compared to buy 10 single trip tickets. So plan your itinerary carefully.

Another way to save on transportation costs would be to walk more. Yes! Walking is a great way to see a new place. You will discover things and see things that you otherwise would not have seen should you have taken the bus or train. Since you are on a holiday, just walk a lot more. Bring a good pair of shoes so that your feet does not hurt from all the walking. In fact, I find walking around the city much less stressful than taking the train or the bus. Walking gives me time to get my orientation while letting me enjoy the sights of the city.

5 Must See Things in Paris

I am listing down a list of 5 must see things when you visit Paris. I visited Paris a few years back and I must say it is really a lovely city. Give yourself three or more days if you intend to visit the Lourve as you could literally spend hours and hours just in the Lourve alone. Here are my top 5 Must See Things in Paris

1. The Eiffel Tower

2. The Lourve

3. Arc de Triumph

4. Pont Neuf / Seine River

5. Notre Dame Cathedral
